Pottsville Indulged (Hicksite - Historic)

Existence Date Range:

According to the WPA Inventory of Church Archives for the Society of Friends in Pennsylvania, this meeting was established in 1831 by Exeter Monthly meeting (Hicksite) after the division of the original Pottsville Indulged meeting:

"In the early part of 1831, 1 acre of ground was purchased from Benjamin Potts. In the same year, a one-story brick meeting-house was erected and a burial gorund was plotted. The history of this meeting is very obscure because fo absence of records and data. The meetinghouse was converted into a public school during , or immediately following, the year 1836. An old history of Schuylkill County states that on May 20, 1836, it was resolved that the school in the second-story of the Friends Meetinghouse on Sharp Mountain should be called School Number 2. In 1841 Sarah Hunt paid a religious visit to Pottsville and recorded in her journal: 'Our course led us to the foot of the mountains through several villages  to Pottsville, where we stopped and dined at James Gillingham's. Hisis, I think, the only Friends' family here, and we had an opportunity with them.' The old Friends meetinghouse, known as the Bunker Hill School, was a large brick house that later became the property of Henry C. Russell, and it is now a part of the St. John's Roman Catholic Chuirch. During the Civil War it wa used as a hospital. THe Friends' burial ground is situated several feet west of the meetinghouse and is inthe rear of the present St/ John's Parochial School. There are 31 memorial stones of which 8 are inscribed field stones. The family names being Evans, Griscomb, Hawley, Holme and Robertson Only one stone is marked in strictly Qiaker language and several bear the insigna of the Grand Army of the Republic. According to a minute of the Philadelphia Monthly meeting the financial care of the burial ground was transferred in part to that monthly meeting sometime prior to that date."1<

The WPA Inventory shows the location as the southwest corner of Ninth Street and Schuylkill Avenue, Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA.
